Adrian here giving an update on the new build. I wound up choosing the copper build but, I got the wrong shell. I thought I nabbed a shell that was 5mm thick that progressively thins down to 2.5mm at the center then back to 5mm. Instead I took a shell that is 2.5mm at the top that thickens down to a 5mm thickness. A shell using the same concept in a cymbal to get the shell vibrating the most possible from the thinner top edge.
The shell is set up with a standard 45 degree bearing edge on the top for a good attack and sustain, while the bottom edge was rolled out to a 60 degree edge. This increases the contact with the resonant head, giving you more tonality from the copper shell. This will be a lot like vintage drums that have a lot of body in the sound of the drum.
Snare beds had to be hammered into the shell as both edges were completely flat. We can settle with using a special set of wires that are ‘pitched’ but, we like the variety there are of different alloys for the snare wires. So using some jewelry making hammers, I was able to get a good not-so-shallow set of beds. Sorry I’m a sucker for steel wires with bronze or brass clips.
I will get more pics and have it listed on the site ASAP
